On January 20, 2025, former Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was suddenly presented with the Gold Star Medal by incumbent General Secretary To Lam, a half year after the death of his biggest political opponent General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.
It is known that the Gold Star Medal is the most noble medal of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
The Gold Star Medal is awarded or posthumously awarded to individuals with great and especially outstanding contributions and to collectives with outstanding achievements in the revolutionary cause of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Most recently, in July 2024, then General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was also awarded the Gold Star Medal several days before his death.
Previously, at the Central Committee’s Conference (Plenum) in 2012, then General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had to cry because he could not discipline then Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
By awarding the Gold Star Order to former PM Dung, the current leadership led by General Secretary To Lam indirectly acknowledges that Dung is honest, no less than Trong.
